A life in roofing sales is like strapping yourself to a rollercoaster with a faulty switchboard. You don’t know if you’re going to be rocketed backwards off the starting line, stall upside down, or throw your arms up with glee as the g-forces glue you to the seat as you rip through the banked corner. 

There is nothing predictable, certain, or consistent in your life. But no one talks about it. This is why so many roofing sales people quit, why owners complain about high turnover, and newbies get oversold the dream of a multi-six figure income while working a “flexible schedule.”
 
Yes - roofing sales is one of the simplest ways to earn crazy money. But it is far from easy. There are countless options in our industry who can help you get leads, make more sales, streamline operations, and answer your technical questions. 

But as of this writing, there are no resources dedicated to guiding you through the personal challenges of this journey. Preparing you for what to expect. Readying you for change. And laying the stepping stones for what could be the most significant positive change of your life.
 
This is a book about change. Your change. Your journey. To expose the stuff no one talks about or prepares you for. From brutal truths to hidden treasures. To support you through the challenges that your friends and family don’t understand. Like how we carry the emotional weight of the fight we had with our spouse this morning. How we can’t shake the death in the family and still go to work with a smile on our face, faking it when we’re in dark times. 

Or answering the phone at 8:42pm on a Sunday night to an irate customer screaming at you because the crew left a water bottle full of pee in the driveway. No one gets what we go through. Or how emotionally exhausting this business can be (a topic we will be diving deep into in the following pages). Unfortunately, “real talk” like this isn’t always welcomed on the online discussion groups. But rest assured, you are not alone.

 
If we haven’t met yet, my name is Adam Bensman, and people know me as “The Roof Strategist.” I have personally trained tens of thousands of roofing sales reps (both storm and retail) across the US, Canada, and even Australia. 

I host The Roof Strategist YouTube Channel and Podcast (where I have over 300 free training videos and publish every week). I also created The Roofing Sales Success Formula, the all-in-one sales training and system being used by many thousands for both storm and retail as we speak. Used by both everyday sales people and some of the TOP 100 roofing companies in America. Most recently, I’ve been selected as Owens Corning’s official Sales Training Partner.
 
I didn’t get here overnight. I started in roofing sales in 2011 just like most people do. Broke, desperate, and with the sudden realization that I needed more from life. I took the leap, went all in, and joined the industry with zero roofing knowledge and zero sales experience. I had to “figure it out” on my own. It was the most exhilarating journey of my life to go from earning less than $20,000 per year to generating over $140,000 in my first 8 months. 

I’ve filled nearly every role from door to door sales to Chief Operating Officer (C.O.O.) of a roofing company operating in 5 states and 6 cities. I’ve recruited, hired, and trained sales reps all over the country. All this to say - I’ve been in the trenches with thousands of sales reps and have had “behind the scenes” conversations with many. This is why I know you are not alone. I’ve had these conversations over and over again after speaking engagements, private training events, webinars, over email, in YouTube comments, and during after hours events.
 
Why did I write this book?
 
Because I have heard so many amazing people’s stories. Like Josh who was living out of his car for 3 weeks trying to make it in roofing sales, discovered my YouTube channel late night resting in his backseat before bed, and he found the inspiration he needed to stick with it. Josh came up to me after an Owens Corning event in Cleveland to shake my hand and tell me that he earned the most money in his entire life last month.
 
Or James who nearly killed himself with drug abuse and went to prison. When he got out, he dedicated his life to becoming the best version of himself, found roofing sales, and is now living a clean life and leading a sales team. 

And then there’s Kaleb. Who, at 20 years old, faced nearly 5 months of constant rejection, set backs, cancelled contracts, and earned no money. And then it clicked. He “cracked the code” and earned his first 6-figure income just a few months after turning 21.
 
There are countless other stories to share. In fact, it’s the single most rewarding part of what I do - hearing peoples “change stories.” Although they are all very different in the details, the themes are nearly identical. And that’s what we are about to dive into in this book.
 
Roofing sales will chew you up and spit you out, or it will be the single greatest opportunity in your life. The horrifying truth is that 66% or more of roofing sales reps don’t survive their first 12 months. Those that do will likely face a career ending crisis every few years. It happened to me. I tried to leave 3 times. And when I finally stepped away from the day-to-day, it was because I had stressed myself into the intensive care unit of the ER thinking I was having a heart attack before I turned 30. For others, it’s the stress of instability and inconsistency. Or it’s mental health struggles - battling internal demons and setbacks. The most common? Mindset breakdowns, motivation slips away, discipline dwindles, and complacency causes crap sales performance. All of this leads to pressure at home, restless nights, and second guessing everything you’re doing.
 
The journey may not be fun all the time. But it is jam-packed full of powerful lessons, wild growth opportunities, and obstacles that break us or make us unstoppable. How you choose to face this journey is up to you. My mission to ready you for what’s ahead, survive with ease, and build the mega-empire of your dreams.
